Alfonso Cuaron won the Academy Award for best director for “Gravity,” the 3-D space thriller from Warner Bros.
Cuaron, who co-wrote the film with his son, picked up a best-director statuette in a ceremony broadcast live on ABC today from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
The Oscars ceremony, honoring the best work in motion pictures for 2013, is being hosted byEllen DeGeneres and broadcast on the ABC network. Cuaron’s win comes during a year when independent films, including “12 Years a Slave,” led the nominations. Many were financed outside the Hollywood studio system.
“Gravity ” is the top-grossing film among the nine best picture nominees with $705 million in global sales for Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. film studio.
As of last week, the nine best-picture nominees collectively have grossed $1.8 billion in worldwide ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo, down from $2.1 billion for last year’s nine nominees at the time of the ceremony.
