MHRD withdraws extension to VCs of 12 new central universities

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has withdrawn its order giving extension to Vice Chancellors of 12 central universities. The VCs of these universities have received a new order, asking them to hand over the charge to the senior most faculty member. After questions were raised about the earlier order which was seen as "illegal", the ministry officials were told to come up with a fresh directive, sources said. Reportedly, even the University Grants Commission was of the view that the extension order was illegal as it violated the Central University Act. The Act specifically says that the first time VCs will not get extension beyond five years. Meanwhile, the selection process for new VCs of 12 central universities received a setback when GK Chadha, former VC of Jawaharlal Nehru University, passed away. Chadha was member of the search committees for central universities of Rajasthan and Punjab, reported Times of India.
