South Goa zilla panchayat to distribute 20,000 bio-friendly carry bags to reduce plastic waste

South Goa zilla panchayat to distribute 20,000 bio-friendly carry bags to reduce plastic waste MARGAO: Expressing its commitment to reduce the use of plastic carry bags, the South Goa zilla panchayat has provided 1000 bio-friendly disposal carry bags to each of the 20 zilla panchayat members for the purpose of distributing them to the public. Chairperson of South Goa zilla panchayat Nelly Rodrigues informed this at the bi-monthly meeting of the zilla panchatat held recently. A budgetary layout of Rs 30 cr was also approved for the next financial year by the zilla panchayat at the meeting. As the second-tier panchayat bodies in the state don't have any avenues to generate their own revenue, it has to depend on government grants for carrying out all developmental works. Budgetary allocations for the South Goa ZP over the last few years have remained less than Rs 3 cr. Of the Rs 30 cr amount sought from the government for the forthcoming year, Rs 10 cr have been proposed to be utilized from the funds meant for development of scheduled castes and tribes, Rs 10 cr under rural development works, and another 10 cr from octroi. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/South-Goa-zilla-panchayat-to-distribute-20000-bio-friendly-carry-bags-to-reduce-plastic-waste/articleshow/31179662.cms
