121 ineligible college teachers getting UGC pay scale: CAG

A recent report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of the Higher Education department in Odisha, has unearthed gross irregularity in the University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scale of 121 college teachers who do not have the required eligibility. As per the CAG report, the name of 17 professors of government colleges and 104 lecturers and readers have been enlisted in the UGC scale of pay, in violation of the provisions. Opposition leaders in the state assembly have demanded a thorough probe to ascertain as to how these college teachers have been selected for the UGC scale of pay as they have not undertaken four refresher courses and have no required marks as per the UGC norm. “Whether the Higher Education department and the Directorate of Higher Education were unaware of the issue or they had deliberately kept it under wraps, needs to be probed”, they pointed out. The leaders have also alleged that there a group of officials in these two departments who have facilitated UGC pay scale to the ineligible teachers and ignored the eligible teachers. Admitting irregularity in his department, the minister assured the members that the files of all the teachers, getting the UGC scale of pay, would be thoroughly verified, reported Odisha Sun Times.
