Malnad College of Engineering and Philips experiment with solar lights

The Malnad College of Engineering (MCE), in collaboration with Philips India, has installed solar streetlights to light up its campus in Karnataka. Both organisations have spent about Rs. 4 lakh each to install the 18 solar-powered streetlights.

Jayanth, MCE principal, said that the project took shape because of interest shown by Narendranath Udupa, who heads a Philips R&D unit in Bangalore. “Dr. Udupa is an alumnus of the college, and also served the institution as assistant professor. With his keen interest, MCE has signed a memorandum of understanding with Philips to install solar streetlights. We shared the cost on a 50-50 basis,” the principal said
