Unwanted body hair can pose a problem for many women and one simple way to get rid of it is by shaving it off. But singer-turned-fashion designer Victoria Beckham says she never shaves her legs using razor. The 39-year-old says that she abandoned tiresome shaving for a more hi-tech method of hair removal — laser hair reduction. ‘I don’t shave my legs. I got laser (treatment) which is amazing. You can go back for little touch-ups if you do see little hair appearing. But I’ve been very lucky that I haven’t had to,’ Beckham told Allure magazine. ’That was one of the best tips that Eva Longoria ever gave me,’ she said. So is laser therapy that effective in getting rid of unwanted body hair? Let’s find out. According to Dr Ruchi Agrawal, a practising dermatologist and cosmetologist, ‘ Laser is an excellent tool for permanent hair reduction, which saves time and money . Whatever hair grows back, does so very slowly and are much finer thus reducing your need to wax or thread . Additional benefits include freedom from ingrown hair and rashes occurring during waxing or threading. Laser hair reduction is great from hygiene point of view as it significantly reduces hair in underarms.’ What happens in a laser treatment? Dr Ruchi explains, ‘A beam of laser is pulsed on the area where hair is to be reduced. It passes harmlessly through the skin and is absorbed by a pigment called melanin found in the hair follicle. The heat from the laser destroys the root of the follicle to a large extent, thus preventing its growth.’ There may be mild pain or sensation of a pin-prick during the sessions. Depending on the area, it can take up to 10 minutes to 2 hours to finish the treatment. You will need 6-8 sessions to see good results. In India, the cost can vary from Rs 1,000 to 20,000, depending on which body part you wish to treat with laser. Also, remember, this is a hair reduction technique and not a hair removal one so there will be prolonged but slight growth which can be managed with other hair removal methods like waxing, threading, etc. Read more about laser hair reduction treatment.
