In the first transplant of its kind, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust has used 3D printing to create a new pelvis for a man who had lost half of his to bone cancer. Scans were used to identify how much bone would be removed, and a replacement was created by fusing layers of titanium powder with a laser. It was them coated with a mineral into which the remaining bone could grow, and a standard hip replacement was fitted. The patient is now able to walk with the aid of a stick. The printing was done by Stanmore Implants. Source : http://www.twi-global.com/news-events/industry-updates/medical-industry/
